A new Neotropical species of Liothrips (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) associated with Ludwigia (Myrtales:Onagraceae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Zamar,María I.; Hernández,María C.; Soto-Rodríguez,Gerardo A.; Retana-Salazar,Axel P..
Liothrips ludwigi (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) is described and a key to differentiate it from the other four species present in Argentina is provided. This species can be distinguished by the following characters: major setae on head and pronotum slender and brown yellowish; anteromarginal setae short (14µ-21µ), and metanotum reticulated with hexagonal cells. Liothrips ludwigi feeds and reproduces on Ludwigia grandiflora (Michx.) Greuter & Burdet and L. grandiflora ssp. hexapetala (Hook. & Arn.) G.L. Nesom & Kartesz (Myrtales: Onagraceae). This is the first record of the association between Liothrips and this family of plants.

Active anti-acetylcholinesterase component of secondary metabolites produced by the endophytic fungi of Huperzia serrata Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Wang,Zhejian; Ma,Zhao; Wang,Lili; Tang,Chengchen; Hu,Zhibi; Chou,GuiXin; Li,Wankui.
Background An endophytic fungus lives within a healthy plant during certain stages of, or throughout, its life cycle. Endophytic fungi do not always cause plant disease, and they include fungi that yield different effects, including mutual benefit, and neutral and pathogenic effects. Endophytic fungi promote plant growth, improve the host plant's resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, and can produce the same or similar biologically active substances as the host. Thus, endophytic fungal products have important implications in drug development. Result Among the numerous endophytic fungi, we identified two strains, L10Q37 and LQ2F02, that have anti-acetylcholinesterase activity, but the active compound was not huperzine A. The aim of this study was to...

Cultivation and Biological Characterization of Chicken Primordial Germ Cells BABT
Ji,Meng; Guan,Wei-jun; Gao,Yu-hua; Li,Lu; Bai,Chun-yu; Ma,Yue-hui; Li,Xiang-chen.
The purpose of this work was to investigate the isolation, culture process of chicken gonadal primordial germ cells (PGCs) and study their biological characterization. PGCs were harvested from 5.5-day-old chicken embryonic genital ridges and explanted onto chicken embryonic fibroblasts (CEFs). The results showed that the primary cultivation of chicken PGCs on their own gonadal stroma cells were better than CEFs at first two days for reproduction. The conditioned media supported the growth and colony formation of PGCs for a prolonged time in vitro and maintained a normal diploid karyotype, which were positively stained by alkaline phosphatase (AKP), periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and reacted with anti-SSEA-1, SSEA-3, Oct4, Blimp1 and Sox2. Real-time PCR showed...

Les stocks de poissons démersaux sous quota
en Manche Est et mer du Nord ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine.
Cod (Gadus morhua, L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus, L.), saithe (Pollachius virens, L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus, L.), sole (Solea vulgaris, L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) make up the main demersal stocks under quota which concern the French fishery in North Sea and Eastern English Channel. The diagnosis on the state of stocks are set up at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Recommendations which result from the analyses are proposed to the European Union. Most of the stocks are close or outside their safe biological limits. Several reasons account for that such as the high fishing mortality rates and mixed fisheries on species with diverse biological characteristics. Consequently, more and more young...

Molecular typing and biological characteristics of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from cystic fibrosis patients in Brazil BJID
Stehling,Eliana Guedes; Leite,Domingos S; Silveira,Wanderley D.
The present study had as objective to evaluate the genotypic diversity and biological characteristics, such as hemolysin, protease, elastase of 56 clinical strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from 13 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients attending at the School Hospital of Campinas State University (UNICAMP), Brazil. Genotypic diversity has been determined by Ribotyping (RT) and the pattern of the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR (ERIC-PCR) of each strain. The production of elastase was significantly different only among mucoid and nonmucoid isolates. Joint results obtained by (RT) and ERIC-PCR methods were able to discriminate all strains isolated from both the same and different patients. Additionally, we observed four strain clusters...
